Large Format Printer Setup & Assembly Guide
Setting up a Large Format Printer (such as the Jetapl, GraphKing or Locor series) requires a blend of mechanical assembly and electronic precision. Following this sequence ensures the frame is stable and the sensitive printheads are protected from electrical damage.
1. Mechanical Assembly (The Frame)
- Stand & Legs: Assemble the heavy-duty legs and the beam bar first. Ensure all bolts are tightened firmly. The machine weighs significantly, and any “wobble” in the stand will cause visible lines (banding) in your prints.
- Leveling: Once the stand is assembled, use a spirit level on the printing bed. Adjust the feet until the bed is perfectly horizontal.
- Body Mounting: Carefully lift the main printer body onto the stand and secure it with the factory-provided screws.
- Feeding & Take-up System: Install the front take-up rollers and rear feeding system. Ensure the rollers are aligned so the media pulls straight and doesn’t “telescope” or wrinkle.
2. Electrical & Power Requirements
As you correctly noted, these machines are highly sensitive to power quality.
- Voltage Stability: The machine requires a stable 220V supply with fluctuations not exceeding 5%.
- Power Protection: In areas with unstable grids (like many parts of South Africa), we strictly recommend using a 5KW Voltage Regulator or an Industrial Online UPS. This prevents “spikes” from frying the mainboard or the carriage board.
- Grounding (Earthing): The machine must be grounded. Static buildup can cause the printhead to “fire” incorrectly or shorten the lifespan of the electronic components.
3. Printhead Installation & Ink Priming
- Static Safety: Before touching the printhead or cables, ensure you are discharged (touch a metal grounded object).
- Cabling: Connect the head cables carefully. Ensure they are inserted straight into the slots to avoid short-circuiting the head.
- Ink Order: Match your ink lines to the correct dampers (CMYK).
- Manual Priming: Use a syringe to gently pull ink from the tanks, through the lines, and into the dampers. This ensures the printhead is never “fired dry.”
- Initial Inking: Use the machine menu:
Menu > Maintenance > Inkingto fill the printhead nozzles.
4. Daily Operational Maintenance (The Success Habits)
To prevent ink from solidifying and clogging the expensive printheads, these two steps are non-negotiable:
- Daily Nozzle Check: Every single morning, print a nozzle test strip. Do not begin production until every line in the test strip is crisp and present.
- Daily Cleaning: Use the software’s cleaning function to flush the heads. If the machine has been sitting idle, a manual wipe of the wiper blade and capping station with lint-free swabs is recommended.
5. Software & Calibration
IP Configuration: Set your computer’s network card to a static IP (usually
196.12.0.188) to communicate with the printer’s network port.RIP Installation: Install Maintop 5-6.1 and the specific custom driver for your model.
Alignment: Perform the Bi-directional and Step Calibration. This ensures that as the carriage moves back and forth, the dots land exactly where they should for a sharp, high-resolution finish.
SourcePrinting Pro-Tip: Think of your Large Format Printer like a high-performance car. The 5KW regulator is your insurance, and the Daily Nozzle Check is your oil check. Skipping these leads to expensive repairs!
