Master Printing & Heat Press Guide

Brought to you by Source Printing

This guide provides the technical settings and professional tips required for high-quality transfers. Please note that these are guidelines; we always recommend a small test press as environmental factors (like humidity and altitude) can affect results.

Section 1: Sublimation Guidelines

Sublimation is a process where ink turns into gas to bond with polyester-coated “blanks”. Note: You cannot sublimate onto 100% cotton without special sprays.

Essential Sublimation Settings

Blank ItemTemperature (°C)Time (Seconds)Professional Tip
Ceramic Mugs180°C80sSecure with heat tape. Let the mug heat up with the press before starting the timer.
Polyester T-Shirts180-200°C45sUse Teflon sheeting and plain white paper inside to prevent ink bleeding to the back.
Cotton T-Shirts (Light)180°C40sRequirement: Use Cotton Sublimation Spray before and after pressing.
Glass / Mason Jars180°C180sCaution: Glass must warm up gradually with the press from a cold start to prevent cracking.
Aluminium Bottles190°C70sAvoid over-tightening the tension knob to prevent the bottle from bending.
Mouse Pads190°C65sEnsure even pressure for a sharp edge-to-edge finish.
Rock Slate180°C180sUse firm pressure to ensure the image transfers into the stone’s texture.
MDF / Wood Items180°C80sWorks for coasters, keychains, and luggage tags.
Non-Woven Bags110-120°C15-20sTricky: These can melt easily. Start at a low heat and work up slowly.

Section 2: DTF (Direct-To-Film) Guidelines

DTF is highly versatile and works on almost any fabric, including dark cotton and polyester.

Essential DTF Settings

Fabric TypeTemperatureTimePressure
100% Cotton150°C – 160°C10 – 15sMedium / High
Polyester / Blends140°C – 150°C10 – 12sMedium
Nylon / Delicate140°C8 – 10sMedium

The DTF Workflow

  1. Pre-Press: Press your garment for 5–10 seconds before applying the transfer. This removes moisture and wrinkles for a better bond.
  2. Positioning: Place the DTF film with the printed side down. Cover with a Teflon sheet or parchment paper.
  3. The Press: Apply firm, even pressure.
  4. The Peel: For Source Printing DTF, we recommend a Cold Peel. Allow the garment to cool completely (approx. 30–60 seconds) before removing the film.
  5. Finishing Press: After peeling, press the design again for 5 seconds with a Teflon sheet to secure the edges and give it a professional finish.

Section 3: Design & Artwork Requirements

To ensure your prints aren’t pixelated, follow these exact specifications:

  • Resolution: Minimum 300 DPI at actual size.
  • File Formats: PDF (preferred), AI, CDR, or high-res PNG with transparent backgrounds.
  • Color Mode: Save your files as CMYK (for standard printing) or RGB (for specific industrial DTF workflows).
  • Mirroring: DO NOT mirror your artwork for DTF; our software handles this. For Sublimation, artwork should usually be mirrored.
  • Minimum Detail: Lines should be at least 1mm thick. Fine text or thin “hairlines” may not adhere correctly.

Section 4: Care & Maintenance

Protect your investment and your prints:

  • Washing: Wait at least 24 hours before the first wash. Wash garments inside out in cold or cool water.
  • Drying: Air dry only. Do not tumble dry.
  • Ironing: Never iron directly onto the print. Iron on the reverse side using a low heat setting.
  • Machine Safety: If the heat press is not used for 10 minutes, switch it off. Never touch the heating plate while it is on.
